This looks to be a possible cause of the issues some of you have experienced. The old OpenCart store was not secure, which bothered a number of people and threw up browser warnings. Enabling https seemed like the best thing to do with the new store, but apparently it can slow down the server response time. If it ultimately proves necessary to solve this problem I will disable it. Seems a ludicrous thing to have to do, so it will be a last resort.
Before considering that route, I am looking into the KeepAliveTimeout directive in the Apache conf file which can be set to enable seemingly-idle connects to, well, stay alive! It looks simple enough to do - I may regret saying that.
SSL may be slowing down opencart
