not able to skip through videos with VLC

Post by LittleFool »

I have this weird "problem" with all new-ish videos from here that I can't skip through them with VLC. To be exact, I can skip through the first couple minutes usually, then at some point the video freezes only showing one frame but the audio keeps playing like normal.

This applies only to newly shot videos, not any remastered versions. For example I can't skip through any videos in the Nina Alder set with VLC but I can skip through the remaster of Meet Shauna. A different video player doesnt have that problem at all. Also VLC doesnt have that problem with other videos I have so far.

Does anyone noticed this too? Maybe with other videos or is this a me thing?

VLC certainly has its shortcomings, so it's not just you. I find it does not respond well to skipping through videos. You could try updating VLC to see if that fixes it (I doubt if it will though) or use different software. My camera and the video format I generate has not changed in five years. That said, the remastered 4x3 videos are exported to MP4 using Handbrake as opposed to Compressor, since HB trims off the black edges of the video. Trying to get compressor to do that is a mammoth pain.

The reason I started recommending VLC some years ago was that it will play all formats on virtually all platforms, which helped stop people writing to me and saying, "My video won't play." Of course, they never thought to tell me anything about their circumstances (type of computer, type of video player, age of software, etc.), and I'm no tech guy anyway. It was the line of least resistance.

On a Mac, Quicktime works best. As for PCs, I don't really know what to suggest. I haven't used one myself in 25 years! My knowledge is therefore sadly lacking. However, there must be a plethora of choices out there these days.

Oh its fine, i got a different player that works, I was just curious if someone else has the same issue. If you never changed the video format that makes it even weirder tho...
I changed to linux almost a year ago now, maybe its something specific about VLC and linux that causes this.
