Going to 1920x1080 pixels may have been a mistake

Postby Bound2Burst » 09 Oct 2016, 08:21

It is clear that some customers are no longer buying from the store because they can't download or can't play 1920x1080-pixel files. I rather thought the world was ready for the upgrade, but it seems not. Sales have dropped very significantly over the past few months and it is now proving detrimental to my business, so I must take remedial action.

I plan to revert to publishing 1280x720-pixel versions of movies from now on, and include a 1920x1080-pixel version for the time being - you'll be able to download either or both. I will then see which version gets downloaded the most, and if the vast majority of customers opt for the smaller size I will discontinue the larger. I will plan to add to the store 1280x720-pixel versions of movies published during the summer, but that will take quite some time. Hopefully, things will pick up once this change is implemented.

This is how the movies will appear in the B2B Store when both formats are available:

So no 4K then!?

Shocked that people can't play 1080p in this day and age, well maybe not too much if they still prefer .wmv :P

Nonetheless I hope sales pick up again :?

Well this is an interesting one.

Personally, I haven't seen much benefit to 1080p for indoor movies - you need a lot of light for the camera to pick up that much detail. No doubt it gives a good image for outdoor movies though, and many customers will see it as a better product regardless. Having gone to 1080p there is probably no going back.

I expect your customer base is global, and I can easily believe that there are people in the world who want to buy your movies but can't realistically download a 1GB file. The question is - for those people, is a 500MB file that much better? Perhaps a 200MB 480p version would be a better alternative, or perhaps you could offer all three then drop whichever one is least popular. Just a thought.

I have encounter this problem before on other computers. And if you can't play the video then why buy it ?

I hope changing back will increase your sales
