DreamHost Question

Just wondering Dave, when purchasing sets/videos on FilesForever, they are made "Public" for viewing, by default. After purchasing each set/video, I have to manually set them to "Private". Is there a way to change the default setting for purchases on FilesForever to "Private"?

Really! I didn't know that. I will ask the team about it. I always assumed because it was password protected inside your account that it would be visible to you only.

Aye; I would have assumed as much also. Not the case though, unfortunately, which makes my first move after every purchase a rather hurried switch of the file from Public to Private. :P

I think if a file is listed as public and you were to give out your unique url for it, it's not instantly downloadable by others. Rather they'd just see the preview picture and description with an option to buy, and if they do all payment goes to B2B as usual. I believe the original owner can set a commission rate so that people reselling a clip would get a cut.

For example - Dave sets the rate to 10%. I buy clip A, set it to public and distribute my unique url for it. Sales from this link would be 90% to B2B and 10% to me.

At the moment its set to 0% so all sales from these links go 100% to B2B, so no harm done.

That's how I understand it anyway - I could be totally wrong.

BlahPeeV,

I have been in touch with the staff at Dreamhost. They don't think your file is actually available to anyone other than you, although the description page is public. By setting it to private, no one else can see it in your account. I have to set the description page to public when I upload files otherwise no one would be able to see them or buy them. That does not enable them to download the file itself without making a purchase and receiving a password. Once it is in your own account, no one but you can access your files unless you give out your own personal password.

qpeg,

Thank you for your comments. I think you are correct in your interpretation.

If anyone is still concerned, please send me further information to pass along to Dreamhost.

Many thanks for bringing this issue to light.

Dave.

Ah, good to hear. :)

Is there a way to set files I purchase to Private by default anyway?

I don't think so. However, since other people can't download them from your account, I would not worry about it. I did hear more from the staff at Dreamhost by the way, and they basically said there isn't a security problem.
